Interest rates in US for fixed deposits also called Term deposits are very low and usually around 1.5 to 2% annum. Where as the fixed deposit rates in India is always greater than 8%. In all scenarios tranferring money to a Public sector bank in India in to an NRE account is the best and safest investment you can do while you work hard in US.

Try not to open an NRE account in small Co-operative and Private Sector banks to be safe .Always Prefer a Public Setor Bank.

NRE or Non-Resident External Rupee Account is maintained by non-resident Indian (NRI) in Indian Rupees.

This account is meant for foreign exchange earned outside India and transferred to India. Interest earned is tax-free. They are freely repatriable (money can be transferred without any restriction)
