Myth and Truth of H1B Visa

Myth and Truth of H1B Visa

Every Enterprise wants to have the next generation innovator be born in their company and want to tap the top skill set across the world.

Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft,  Mark Zuckerberg CEO of facebook and a number of other leaders of technology companies always advocate increasing or entirely lifting the limit of the H1B  visas issued for hiring foreign skilled workers.

Yet, Many US high-tech worker feels that their own position is threatened.
Myth 1 – We already have enough foreign engineers in the US.
Truth – The current limit of H1B visas is 65,000 per year plus some 20000 advanced degree visas. This category includes hiring not only programmers and software engineers, but a wide range of other skilled positions ex Doctors, bioscience engineers, aerospace engineers, and many other high skilled jobs .
Considering that there are at least several million domestically occupied programmers and engineers, the foreigners are a little fraction of the total workforce of the particular occupation.
Myth 2 – H1b Folks  are willing to work day and night, for pennies.
Truth : The conditions of the employment of a foreign ’skilled’ worker require a US employer to offer the same employment conditions as offered to the domestic employees, and at least the average pay for the work done. H1b Employees are neither overworked, nor severely underpaid. Well Some Desi companies may exploit but they need to be reported as they are unlawful practice.
Myth 3 – There is a huge number of  foreign skilled engineers wanting to come to the country.

Truth– Finding of a talented skilled foreign worker is not an easy task. Persuading them(highly skilled professionals)  to come  work and live in a different country and culture is even more difficult. Faced with the uncertainty of visa issues, stamping issues, Immigration backlogs in the US and restriction for spouse H4 visa not able to work, a foreign professional may choose to stay and work in their own country.
