Blood pressure is serious business. Hypertension or hypotension referring to high and low blood pressures respectively can mean serious repercussions to your health. While with high blood pressure you stand the chance of acquiring heart diseases, diabetes, stroke and other life-threatening illnesses, low blood pressure can cause fatigue, dizziness, loss of concentration, nausea, blurred vision, breathing problems and palpitations. 120/80 mm Hg is considered the normal blood pressure of a healthy human while anything around 90/60 constantly could mean hypotension. Low blood pressure may cause low blood supply to important organs of the body.

If you fall in the low blood pressure category, don’t panic. There are ways with which you can treat it naturally without heavy medication. Here are a few tips how.

Intake more salt

Common salt used in our kitchen is chemical Sodium Chloride. Sodium in salt is said to increase blood pressure and that is why in most cases people are asked to restrict high salt intake. But it works differently for hypotension cases but take care not to overdo this remedy as taken in excess, this may lead to serious problems. Consult your doctor and keep monitoring the blood pressure and note the changes so that you don’t overdo it.

Increase water intake

Drinking water is in general is great for the human body. And in case of low blood pressures, it also helps increase the BP. And drink as much as you want since water doesn’t come with any negative side effects.

 

Maintain a healthy diet

Include more healthy food options like fibers, fruits, fresh vegetables and whole grains. With all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients available in this food, your body has all the nutrients it needs to maintain the blood pressure normal. Also, instead of heavy three meals per day, you can switch to eating smaller meals at lesser time intervals which can help the blood pressure from dropping quickly after your meals. Also, take care to eat food low in carbohydrates.

 

Caffeine

While caffeine is addicting and is not good for the body in most cases, a strong cup of coffee, hot or cold chocolate or any drink with caffeine content can cause a temporary increase in your blood pressure. If you have constantly lowering blood pressure, a cup of caffeinated beverage early in the morning or after your meals could make a difference in the blood pressure. But do take care not to overdo it since the long term effects of caffeine consumption are not the best.

 

Raisins and herbs

In traditional Ayurveda, raisins are commonly used in treatment of low blood pressures. Soak a handful of raisins (almonds, peanuts etc.) in water and let it be overnight and eat them early in the morning in empty stomach. Doing this continuously for a few weeks will yield good results.

In addition to these, basil or Tulsi leaves, licorice root and beetroot juices are also good remedies for treating low blood pressure naturally.

And if in a few months, you see no improvement with the natural techniques, make sure to consult your doctor.
