My H1B Dream of US Virgin Island!!!
I have been working on H1B for last 10 years , My wife is also working from past 6 years, we have been making good load of money and paying tons of Taxes to the US government.
After all this hard work we thought it time to have Fun at the Caribbean’s and booked a ticket from JFK to St. Thomas (US Virgin Island) for 5 days . We choose St. Thomas
because it is a US territory. Since our original visa stamps on our passports have
already expired, going to any other non-US island or country would mean having to re-enter with a new US visa, an exercise we are not interested of any longer .
The airlines booked us from NY to St. Thomas via St. Maarten , we never realized that we would need to have a valid US visa during transit in St Maarten as it’s a Dutch/French territory . They allowed us to board the flight at JFK and we were denied to enter the flight to go to St Thomas during transit at St. Maarten. The airline said you need to have a valid visa for boarding the flight to St Thomas . We both had a valid H1B visa petition and all our documents with us but they were not interested in looking or allowing us to board the flight. They said the only option they have is to rebook the ticket for them to your home country India else to JFK.
We knew if we go back to JFK we should be fine since we have a valid H1B petition for Immigration Clearance. Hence we booked the tickets to JFK and came back to US with a worst vacation experience while on H1B.
Even after you legally live in the US for 10 years, pay ton load of money in taxes , the sense you get is “This is your home” is just an illusion, as long as you are H1B.
On H1B If I am Fired from my Job, The next day I am no one in this country and I shall be considered illegal immigrant if I don’t leave the country else apply for some type of US Visa.
On H1B you cannot have multiple jobs and work for anyone, you can work only with the sponsor petition.
H4 cannot work unless Primary H1B has approved I140 else in his/her 7th year of H1B and h4 applies for EAD. Glad that at least some of H4 are allowed to work starting this year.
This is my choice to be on h1B and my mistake of not going through immigration policies before booking my flight. No one to blame but my irresponsibility.
